Raising and caring for children is important work—do you believe it? Do you acknowledge your strengths and talents, and the gifts you bring to the children in your life? You take care of everyone else, it seems—who takes care of you? Discuss the challenges to feeling good about your work, and discover new ideas for taking care of yourself, and how that helps the kids in your life.
The Joy of Food: Activities and Books to Promote Healthy Eating (MNCPD)
Do your kids take food for granted? Come and learn strategies to help children develop a healthy attitude about food, and what you can do to make learning about food more fun. It’s all about wonderful, inspiring, colorful, and fun new picture, board, lift-the flap, and non-fiction children’s books! With approximately 5,000 new kids books each year, how can one parent, librarian, or child care provider find the gems? Come find out about the many kinds of literature for children, and how to evaluate the quality and appropriateness for your children.
Superhero and Hero Play (MNCPD)
We live in interesting times, in which real-life heroes share the spotlight with superheroes. Learn how to help young kids understand the difference, and how to support development of the hero in every child. Time for Q&A, sharing, small group, and discussion of children’s books will be included.

When it Hurts: Fostering Life Skills through Reading & Play (MNCPD)
If you have ever struggled to help children understand some of life’s more difficult challenges, such as a death in the family, divorce, moving, or the arrival of a new sibling, you are not alone. Discover how children’s books that are carefully crafted to speak a child’s language through words and pictures help young kids learn, grow, or heal in a safe, comforting way. New and classic children’s books will be presented, as well as activities to enhance the fun and learning.
Workshop Presenter
Shelley Butler is an approved trainer by the Minnesota Center for Professional Development Registry (MNCPD). She has been presenting workshops on early childhood topics and children’s literature for over ten years to parent groups, child care associations, child care centers, and early childhood educators and administrators. Co-author of the award-winning book on early childhood, The Field Guide to Parenting, she also writes children’s book review and on topics in early childhood. Her background and experience in library and information science is the perfect complement to her passion for children’s literature.
